Dichiarazione dell’Alto Commissario delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati, António Guterres
Ginevra — Ieri, di ritorno a Ginevra dal Pakistan, sono venuto a conoscenza dei commenti negativi e infondati che sono stati rivolti al mio Ufficio e a singoli funzionari da un esponente del governo italiano. Questi commenti sono stati ampiamente riportati dai media durante il fine settimana.
L’UNHCR ha una responsabilità globale nella protezione dei diritti dei rifugiati. Gli attacchi immotivati e personali sono inaccettabili, non mutano e non muteranno l’impegno dell’UNHCR nel perseguire il suo mandato e la sua missione umanitaria. Continueremo a esercitare questo mandato in Europa così come lo facciamo in altre parti del mondo.
Il mio Ufficio è ben consapevole delle sfide che l’immigrazione irregolare pone all’Italia e ad altri paesi europei. Continueremo a lavorare con i governi e con tutti gli altri partner per affrontare queste sfide in modo da garantire il pieno rispetto dei diritti dei rifugiati e di quanti hanno bisogno di protezione internazionale. Il mio rappresentante in Italia, Laurens Jolles, e la mia portavoce in Italia, Laura Boldrini, godono della mia piena fiducia nel portare avanti questo importante compito.

Statement by UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres
GENEVA– On my return to Genevafrom Pakistanyesterday I learned of the comments recently made about my Office and individual members of my staff by a member of the Italian government. These comments were extensively reported over the weekend in the Italian media.
UNHCR has a global responsibility to protect the rights of refugees. Baseless personal attacks are unacceptable and cannot and will not alter UNHCR’s commitment to its mandate and its humanitarian mission. We will continue to exercise this mandate in Europeas we do in other parts of the world.
My Office is well aware of the challenges which irregular migration poses to Italyand to other European countries. We will continue to work with governments and other partners to address these challenges in a way which ensures full respect for the rights of refugees and others in need of international protection. My representative in Italy, Mr. Laurens Jolles, and my spokeswoman there, Ms. Laura Boldrini, enjoy my full confidence as we pursue this important endeavor.
